Photo Encaustic Workshop with Rae Broyles

Saturday, December 7th, 2024, 10am-3:30pm

Explore the basics of the art of photo encaustic painting! Encaustic painting is an ancient art that uses a molten beeswax solution composed of beeswax, resin, and sometimes pigment.  We will review the basics of using this exciting medium along with safety issues, surface options, layering, fusing with a blow-torch or heat-gun and more.   This workshop will focus on using student images brought to class and you will see ways to colorize, texturize and enhance your own images.

NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.  Encaustic medium and tools are all included but students are welcome to bring additional scraping tools, fabrics, threads etc and extra wood panels. (see below). Please wear closed toed shoes and clothes that could be ruined or a good smock.

Supplied by Instructor:

1 small wood panels

All heating elements, wax, oil paints, brushes, glue, torches, heat guns, and scraping tools.

Please bring:

3-6 Images/photos printed out on regular copy paper. You may want multiple print outs. B/W is best. Images sizes can be 6x6, 8x8 or 8x10. Can also be cut for collaging.

A roll of Paper towels

Please wear closed toed shoes and clothes that could be ruined or a good smock.

Optional:

  • Additional wood panels no larger than 11x14.

  • Sharp or interesting household tools (They may be ruined) to scrap into wax with. Dollar store is a good option to find interesting things.

  • Threads, fabrics. or any natural materials you may want to embed in wax. (Nothing poly or plastic!)

  • A few small or very small tubes of inexpensive oil paints.
